William Bradford Turner Unit, No. 265

P.O. Box 8, Garden City, NY 11530

Garden City's American Legion Auxiliary Unit 265, while undertaking its own endeavors, collaborates with other women who are related to veterans; through an established network of units through County, State and National jurisdictions. Members are devoted to the provision of assistance to needy veterans, their families and children in ways that government programs do not provide. We are uncompensated volunteers. All donations are to be allocated directly for the purposes a unit addresses within the spirit of the Auxiliary mission.

ALA Unit 265 was chartered by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York on July 31, 1944 and its founding was authorized by American Legion National on July 31, 1944. While other units of Nassau County were chartered before and after that time; the Nassau County Committee American Legion Auxiliary (NCCALA), to which Unit 265 belongs, was founded in November of 1924.

Unit 265 enjoys joint efforts with and dedication to the veterans who are members of American Legion Post 265. Both Post 265 and Unit 265 of Garden City bear the name of William Bradford Turner of the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division. He was killed defending a position from a German counter attack near Ronssøy in France on September 27, 1918 (just weeks before the Armistice of November 11th). Age 25 or 26 at the time of his death, Turner was buried in France at the Somme Cemetery. He posthumously was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1919. He spent some of his brief life here in Garden City.

Unit 265 has adopted a ward at the VA Hospital at Northport to provide items of need and opportunities to ease the stay of veteran residents there. In addition to this and other initiatives of our own, we also work in cooperation with the Nassau County Committee American Legion Auxiliary to enhance the lives of other needy veterans their families and children. We bring our values to local scout troops, provide academic incentives for high school students, and we encourage the observance of federal holidays. These are among the numerous programs members of Unit 265 undertake, through the benevolence of our friends and citizens of the Garden City community.

Unit 265 members customarily meet on the third Tuesday of most months (We do not meet in July, August, January or February) at 11 AM at the Garden City Senior Center on Golf Club Lane. We rely, however, on the hands-on contributions of time and talent, and the presence of our members, for the tasks we undertake and the activities we coordinate and sponsor throughout the year.
